What is Implied Volatility?
Implied volatility (IV) is the market's forecast of likely movement in an asset's price. It cannot be solved directly from the Black-Scholes formula, so this calculator uses a binary search — iterating between a high and low volatility bound until the theoretical price matches your market price within 0.01% accuracy.
IV Interpretation Guide
| Range | Signal | Typical Context |
|---|---|---|
| 0 – 20% | Low IV | Calm market, options relatively cheap |
| 20 – 40% | Moderate IV | Normal conditions for most equities |
| 40 – 70% | Elevated IV | Earnings, events, sector stress |
| 70%+ | High IV | Crisis, high uncertainty, meme stocks |
